Depoe Bay is located on the Pacific Ocean, has the smallest navigable harbor in the world and is the best place to whale watch in Oregon - so naturally we planned a trip between Christmas and New Years during the grey whale migration.
We drove down the 5 and then out to the coast at Salem and turned south toward Depoe Bay. We stopped several times along the way to look at the angry, wild ocean and met many people also looking for whales. As it turns out, the whales stayed well off shore due to the stormy conditions and high surf and we only heard one report of one sighting of a spout over a mile out about 'fifteen minutes' ago but we saw NOTHING! We had planned to take a boat out to get a close up look but when we got to Depoe Bay and the Trade Winds ticket office they had a sign posted "SORRY 2 ROUGH 2 SAIL 2 DAY",
We did have a great time exploring the village and enjoyed a fabulous lunch at the Chowder Bowl!!!
We will go back to take that boat trip in the summer when the ocean is calm and it is a bit warmer! Maybe we will see some whales? LOL
