There is nothing quite like the migration of thousands of geese, swans, cranes, egrets and pelicans - so we were very excited to take a 30 minute drive through the country to the Tualatin River Refuge and enjoy it close up!
Well, let's just say we had a lovely walk in a beautiful area in the warm sun!!! When we arrived the parking lot was full and there were tents up along the trail and lots and lots of people out in a field working where there once was a marsh covered with water - and BIRDS!!! The marsh had been drained so that water plants could be planted in an effort to restore the creek running through the refuge to the original banks. In a week or so they plan to re-flood the marsh and hopefully? the birds will return.
We did spot a Blue Heron fishing in the creek, a tiny shrew on the trail and some enormous mushrooms growing on an old log. We also got some much needed exercise in the warm sun and a great view of our favorite mountain (Hood) and some amazing old barns and orange and red vineyards along the way.
